چکیده

Dissolution of the (100) face of octacalcium phosphate (OCP) single crystal in weak acidic solutions (pH = 6.5; 25 ̊C) was observed in situ using atomic force microscopy. Monomolecular steps (2.0 nm high) were observed; they originated from etch pits or crystal edges. Advancement of the dissolution process led to precipitation of nanoparticles as small as ~10 nm even though the solution was undersaturated with respect to OCP. This precipitation of nanoparticles was accompanied by a drastic decrease in the dissolution rate; however, the substrate OCP continued to dissolve, indicating that dissolution and growth occurred simultaneously on the same surface. The precipitated nanoparticles coalesced and eventually covered the entire surface without changing the surface morphology of the substrate crystal. The step height after complete coverage was ~2.0 nm, the same as that observed on the dissolving OCP surface. These findings indicate that the precipitated phase was a pseudomorph of OCP crystal.

Simultaneous dissolution of hydroxylapatite and precipitation of hydroxypyromorphite: Direct evidence of homogeneous nucleation

Results of in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM), ex situ AFM, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction were combined with previous macroscopic investigations to characterize aqueous Pb(NO3)2 reaction with hydroxylapatite (Ca5(PO4)3OH) (HAP). Experiments were conducted by immersing particulate HAP crystals in the AFM fluid cell in s...

An atomic force microscopy study of the dissolution of calcite in the presence of phosphate ions

Dissolution of calcite in the presence of phosphate solutions was studied in situ by Atomic Force Microscopy. Results of experiments in slightly alkaline (NH4)2HPO4 solutions showed that dissolution, measured from etch pit spreading, is significantly reduced compared to that observed in pure deionized water, confirming an inhibitory effect of (NH4)2HPO4 on calcite dissolution. However, rates me...

Dose-dependent modulation of octacalcium phosphate crystal habit by amelogenins.

In vitro studies on interactions between amelogenins and calcium phosphate crystals are critical for elucidating biomineralization mechanisms of tooth enamel. This work was aimed at investigating the effects of native porcine amelogenins on octacalcium phosphate (OCP) crystal growth in a gelatin gel. We prepared OCP mineral discs by circulating calcium and phosphate solutions on the opposite en...

In-Situ Imaging of Ionic Crystal Dissolution Using an Integrated Electrochemical/AFM Probe

The kinetics and mechanism controlling dissolution from the (100) cleavage face of potassium bromide single crystals in acetonitrile solutions have been identified using a novel integrated electrochemical/AFM probe and a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM). With both techniques, dissolution is induced by perturbing the dynamic dissolution/growth equilibrium at the crystal/solution interf...

Kinetics of calcium phosphate nucleation and growth on calcite: implications for predicting the fate of dissolved phosphate species in alkaline soils.

Unraveling the kinetics of calcium orthophosphate (Ca-P) precipitation and dissolution is important for our understanding of the transformation and mobility of dissolved phosphate species in soils. Here we use an in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) coupled with a fluid reaction cell to study the interaction of phosphate-bearing solutions with calcite surfaces. We observe that the mineral surf...
